Penny War: The penny war is designed as a "Battle of the Bands" type event.
Each ensemble has a cup, and a penny is worth one point. ALL silver change and
dollars are negative points. You want your ensemble to be the least amount of negative.
This year, Dr. Locke, Dr. Geraldi, and Mark Norman all became very invested in the
war. Dr. Locke dropped (rolled is more like it) $100 in pennies at the VERY LAST
second to bring Wind Ensemble to victory. This year, the proceeds went to help
Eastern Guilford High School.
Ice Cream Festival: This event is hosted by the Music Academy of North
Carolina. At this event, families can come and listen to music being performed by local
bands (both of a rock/pop style and marching bands), eat free ice cream, and enjoy
various other activities (such as face painting, tie dye, etc).
Nathanael Greene: Nathanael Greene is an elementary school in central North
Carolina. Every year they hold a festival to help raise money for instruments and
supplies for the music program.
Children's Festival: Children's Festival is held every fall at UNC Greensboro.
The idea is to bring children onto the campus to learn and have some family fun. There
are things like decorating cookies, throwing balls throw hoola hoops, clowns, and
different ensembles from the campus perform. Mu Phi Epsilon - Alpha Xi does an
Instrument Petting Zoo where students get to try out different instruments.
Swing Dance: The swing dance is a new event for Mu Phi Epsilon - Alpha Xi. It
will take place on April 20 in the Quad at UNCG. Local high school jazz groups will
perform as well as jazz students from UNCG. All the proceeds will benefit Eastern
Guilford High School.
Faculty Appreciation: At the beginning of every year Mu Phi Epsilon - Alpha
Xi takes a week to show our appreciation to the School of Music Faculty. This
includes breakfast, goodie bags, lunch, and special hand-made crafts. It's important to
us that the faculty knows we appreciate everything they do.
Dodge Ball: Another new event for Mu Phi Epsilon - Alpha Xi. This will take
place on March 31st in the Student Recreation Center.
Jury Relief: Mu Phi Epsilon - Alpha Xi provides free water and cookies on jury
day every semester to help students and professors take a minute to calm down. We
know it's a very stressful time for many people, and we try to lighten the mood.
